In the coming weeks, it is of the utmost importance to us at the Charles H. Wright Museum to keep the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alive. Through this process, we are inviting the community to join us in an effort to not only remember the life and work of Dr. King, but to continue toward justice and equality. As he said in his mountaintop speech, just one day before he was assassinated, “we’ve got some difficult days ahead.” This is still our reality, and as we approach the fifty-year anniversary of both this speech and his assassination, we recognize the importance of continuing to fight for what is right. As Dr. King eerily predicted in his final speech, he did not get there with us, so we as a people are left to continue our journey to the "Promised Land." We are the voices of those who have fought before us and the teachers to those who will fight after us. We are the bones and the bodies that must keep climbing the mountain. We are the blood, the sweat, and the tears. But, when we get to that mountaintop, we will be the eyes that finally see a just world. Even with fifty years between Dr. King’s assassination and today, we are still only beginning this journey. His journey is our journey, and if we work together, we will make it to that mountaintop and live on in that righteous land. We hope our efforts will bring both strangers and friends closer together in order to connect and better Detroit’s community and beyond. Join us in celebrating the legacy of such an important man by sharing stories and photos of how you combat injustice and inequality using the hashtag IAMMLK.
