# MY FREEDOM DAY

Here at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, we educate our visitors on African American culture and history. We tell the stories of the past about everything from voyages on slave ships to abolition to the riots of ‘67. But, one thing we do not highlight on a day-to-day basis is what freedom means to us, the storytellers. We, too, believe that freedom is like water; it ebbs and flows through all of us, leading us on our paths in sometimes unexpected ways. Water is an essential part of human life and, we believe, that freedom is, too. Freedom means having the ability to make choices and the ability to speak up. Freedom means being able to live without fear. Modern day slavery is a $150 billion industry and comes in many forms from human trafficking to forced labor. With more than 45 million people enslaved worldwide, less than 1% are ever rescued. For CNN’s “My Freedom Day”, we aim to draw attention to the desperate need to battle this global epidemic. We must stand together and rise for freedom just as the generations before us triumphantly did. We must remember to speak up in order to be the voices of those silenced by this plague in human society. For the millions enslaved who cannot fight, we must continue to battle, our fists righteously in the air. We must always be conscious that those who suffer in slavery are all around us, struggling every single day. We must recognize the warning signs. We must rise together again to create a better world for today and for the days to come.
